Casulana Lute Consort

The Renaissance in Renewed Bloom

The Casulana Lute Consort, an internationally active ensemble based in Basel, breathes new life into a once-celebrated yet now seldom-heard art: the music of the Renaissance lute consort. Trained at the renowned Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, the musicians restore this sound world to the stage in its original form – with artistry, historical insight, and a passion that resonates deeply.

Through their specialised knowledge and refined interpretations, the musicians embody female presence and expertise within the musical world.

An Ensemble with a Distinct Artistic Identity

Bearing the name of Madalena Casulana – the pioneering 16th-century composer and the first woman to see her music in print – the ensemble stands as a conscious counter-voice to the male-centred canon of music history. Casulana herself insisted that women were just as capable of composing as men – a conviction that shapes and sustains the ensemble’s artistic vision.

Historically Grounded – Artistically Shaped

With soprano, alto, tenor and bass lutes, cittern and voice, the ensemble conjures a chamber sound world of subtlety and richness. Its repertoire spans Italian madrigals, French Airs de Cours, as well as dances and fantasias from the 16th and early 17th centuries. The programme „Le Ballet des Luths“ exemplifies the ensemble’s approach: a finely wrought tapestry of original works for multiple lutes, arrangements of vocal polyphony and historical dance forms, shaped into a musical narrative that is both rooted in scholarship and imbued with poetic expression.

The lutes, usually delicate in character, unfolded an enchanting strength through the presence of the musicians. Within the music’s meditative atmosphere, the ensemble’s shared phrasing revealed a pulse — a heartbeat to be felt.

Early Music with Integrity

The ensemble’s debut at the Basel Lute Days 2022 was met with great enthusiasm from international experts. This was followed by performances at the Musikfest Eichstätt 2023—where the sold-out opening concert was recorded by BR-Klassik—as well as at festivals in Geneva, Utrecht, Admont, Sedan, and at numerous events across Europe.

The ensemble sees itself not only as a guardian of historical practice but also as a creative mediator of forgotten repertoires. Its aim is to ensure that lute music remains meaningful in contemporary contexts without sacrificing its historical integrity. With its delicately textured soundscapes, the subtle dramaturgy of its programmes, and a clear cultural and political stance, the Casulana Lute Consort exemplifies how early music can remain both alive and relevant today.
